Athar A. Khwaja serves as the Chief Executive Officer of Engro Energy Limited (EEL), where he oversees the company’s power generation assets; he has also concurrently held the position of CEO at Engro Powergen Thar Limited (EPTL) since 2023. With nearly two decades of diverse experience across process engineering, project management, marketing, strategic sourcing, and business development, Athar brings a well-rounded and forward-looking perspective to leadership.

Athar began his career at Engro Polymer & Chemicals Limited (EPCL) in 2004 as a Process Engineer, rising to General Manager Technical by 2014. During this time, he played a key role in the relocation, construction, and commissioning of the VCM plant from Baton Rouge LA. He also led the business planning department, where he negotiated EPCL’s first long-term EDC sourcing agreement and executed record VCM exports of 20 KT in 2013.

From 2015 to 2018, Athar led the chemicals marketing function at ICI Pakistan, before rejoining EPCL in 2018 as General Manager, Expansion Projects. He successfully led the PVC-3 and VCM de-bottlenecking expansion projects, navigating complex challenges during the COVID-19 pandemic to ensure timely completion and commercialization. He later assumed the role of Vice President, Projects and Business Development, where he was instrumental in shaping the company’s long-term growth strategy.

Athar holds a bachelor’s degree in Chemical Engineering from McGill University, Montreal, Canada.
